Day 2

The merchant city

Old temples and new architecture, then a rest afternoon before a sushi counter dinner.

Yufuin

A scenic private drive to the artists' onsen town under Mt Yufu; galleries and lake mist.

Day 4

Beppu

The cobalt and blood-red hells, then buried to the neck in a warm sand bath.

Day 5

Mt Aso

Across one of the world's great calderas, grasslands to the horizon, volcano smoking beyond.

Day 6

Kurokawa Onsen

A riverside village of thirty baths, onsen-hopping pass in hand, kaiseki at the ryokan.

Day 7

Rest day

Nothing scheduled: morning rotenburo, river walks and a last long dinner.

Day 8

Depart

Private transfer to Kumamoto for shinkansen or flight.

The harbour city's lantern streets, and champon noodles where they were invented.

Day 2

Two histories

The Peace Park in the morning, Dutch and Portuguese traces at Glover Garden after lunch.

Day 3

Kumamoto

One of Japan's great castles, and Suizen-ji's miniature Mt Fuji. On south by evening.

Day 4

Kagoshima

Sakurajima smoking across the bay: ferry over, lava-field walk, shirokuma ice for courage.

Day 5

Ibusuki

Buried in naturally heated sand by the sea, then an open-air bath overlooking the cape.

Day 6

Rest day

A shōchū distillery visit if they're curious, the beach if not.

Day 7

Depart

Fly out of Kagoshima, arrangements ended as they began: handled.
