Kamikōchi

A guided walk under 3,000-metre peaks along the Azusa river. Alpine lodge lunch.

Takayama

Over the pass to the old merchant town: sake breweries, craft shops, Hida beef dinner.

Day 4

Shirakawa-gō

Morning market first, then the thatched gasshō village and its valley viewpoint.

Day 5

Kanazawa

Kenroku-en garden with a gardener's eye, and the samurai and teahouse districts.

Day 6

Rest day

Gold-leaf gilding or a pottery wheel if they like, the hotel spa if they don't.

Day 7

The last feast

Ōmichō market in the morning, a farewell omakase counter at night.

Day 8

Depart

Shinkansen onward to Tokyo or Kyoto, seats reserved, luggage forwarded.

Private transfer from Tokyo to a ryokan where Fuji fills the window.

Day 2

The classic views

Chureito Pagoda at dawn, a lake cruise, herb gardens, and an open-air bath at dusk.

Day 3

Hakone

Ropeway over the steaming valley, the Open-Air Museum, black eggs at Ōwakudani.

Day 4

Rest day

A slow morning onsen, then as much or as little as they like: Gotemba or the shrine at Fujinomiya.

Day 5

Depart

Chauffeured return to Tokyo, or onward west by shinkansen.
